The concept of purely electric and even hybrid vehicle models is still relatively a fresh one for many of automakers and even more so for consumers. So when Nissan announced that they have reached that remarkable milestone of 50,000 Nissan Leafs sold since they were first manufactured in 2010, is a great feat. This isn’t to say all are in the United States, some of are also in Europe and Japan, so worldwide. Again this is a great feat, even more so when you compare it to their direct competitor the Chevy Volt.

The Leaf was first introduced the consumer in 2010, and since then registered users of the Leaf have amassed a total of 160 million miles, this is nearly 100 million more than the miles gaine by the registered users of the Volt. Now this could obviously be much more for both the Leaf and Volt, since it is safe to say all of those who bought the electric vehicles, never bothered to register their vehicles to have their miles recorded for study purposes. Regardless of this hypothetical statement, there is no doubt the Leaf has been dominate in the electric segment, and could be for the foreseeable future.

Put aside all bragging rights for a bit, and let us just reflect on the great achievements that were made by all automakers involved with the push for fuel-efficiency with purely electric and hybrid models produced in the past 3-4 years. If you factor in a model like the Mitsubishi I, and you will have rougly half a billion miles registered since 2010. If you are able to break that down, and do the math, that would of saved over $50 million USD in gas prices, give or take. This is remarkable, and it shows there can be a future of transportation that doesn’t rely so heavily upon our dependency for fuel. So besides Nissan, Chevy and Tesla, all should be satisfied with this achievement and the process moving forward should be equally amazing.

To learn more about the Nissan Leaf, and the other models that Nissan have improved upon you can visit the Pompano Nissan site, and read their extended reviews.

When you can remove the factor which is fuel dependency, you can sort of make the argument that there will be a lot more happier drivers on the road. The Leaf is truly the perfect vehicle for the urban trekker, or someone who makes a daily commute of 10-20 miles to and from work each day. Then there are those who just abuse the fact they can go anywhere without paying for gas. One Spanish Leaf owner took his Leaf for 27 thousand miles in one year, while one Japanese owner has put on 110 thousand miles on his Leaf so far. Now if you own a leaf and have over 100 thousand miles on it already, you may want to get in touch with Nissan, because you never know what they may give you just for allowing them to case study your Leaf.

The only known problem that the Leaf has shown so far is a degrading battery in arid, hot climates like Southwestern United States. The belief is the heat and dry air sap the battery life much quicker than it would in normal or moderate temperate areas. Even with this one acute problem, Nissan stands by their product, and their consumers show great satisfaction, as does other automakers and their electric car owners. It is a growing trend that is taking North America by storm. Who knows maybe this will be the shift we need to remove ourselves from certain dependencies in everyday life. Allowing us to bring gas prices back to a balanced state, maybe reduce the cost of transportation, public and personal. Time will tell, let us know what your thoughts are on electric vehicles in a comment.
