Motor racing has traditionally been an arena where these car manufacturers develop future technological innovations for road going designs. Is Formula One therefore doing enough to allow the manufacturers to develop green technologies?

Manufacturer entrants

The statistics suggest not. In 2002 there were seven different car manufacturers active in Formula One. However, fast forward ten years and the number of manufacturers currently competing has more than halved with four of them leaving the sport altogether. This includes major automotive players Ford, Toyota, Honda and BMW.

We should of course not forget the impact that rising motoring costs have had on new car sales and ultimately the profitability of car manufacturers. This has of course forced them to review their non-essential activities such as motorsport participation.

However, BMW and Toyota are both believed to have named Formula 1’s constraining technical regulations which limit the scope for environmental technology experimentation as a contributory factor in their decision to withdraw from the sport. Indeed, both companies have subsequently dedicated significant funds towards participation in other areas of motorsport which allow them more freedom to trial technological innovations.

Toyota’s decision is the most apparent, with the Japanese manufacturer attempting to become the first team to successfully win the notorious Le Mans 24 hour race with a petrol hybrid. The decision by the Le Mans organisers to encourage these kind of designs has not only attracted Toyota, but also Porsche who are planning on entering the category in 2014.

The New F1 regulations

Porsche is owned by Volkswagen who are believed to have been involved in the talks with F1 teams over the framing of the new engine regulations for the category  which are due to be implemented in 2014.

These regulations are being brought in so as to make F1 more relevant to the green car industry, with Bernie Ecclestone himself admitting that their efforts so far with devices such as the 60kw KERS system have not been sufficient.

The new regulations will see the sport go from V8 engines to V6 turbo powered united which are more relevant to the green car industry given that they naturally consume less fuel than conventional designed. Indeed, Renault believes that the majority of the new cars it sells will be powered by smaller sized turbo engines by 2014.

Also included in the new rules will be an increased capacity 120kw KERS system which will obviously have a much greater bearing on lap times and therefore warrant much more development time from both teams and participating engine manufacturers. This could of course help the manufacturers find more ways to increase the capacity and range as well as reducing the total weight of batteries; all of which will be of interest to manufacturers developing hybrids and/or fully electric vehicles.

The fact that Volkswagen has decided to invest in Le Mans as opposed to F1 despite having believed to have been involved in the technical discussions is therefore a worrying omen for the category and is perhaps an indication that their efforts to draw back the manufacturers may ultimately prove to be fruitless.

What more can they do?

F1 is stuck in a rather difficult situation. It has a reputation for being a sport which encourages technical innovation from both teams and participating manufacturers. This is why road relevant technology such as power steering, semi-automatic gearboxes and traction control all came into existence.

However, it is this same strength which ultimately becomes it weakness. When a single team comes up with a technical innovation which offers it a significant speed advantage over their competitors, the sport suffers as the result of races which become too predictable. Viewing figures begin to tumble and this ultimately leads to a decline in interest from sponsors, who are ultimately the lifeblood of the sport. After all, no one wants to sponsor a sport which no one watches.

As a result, the sport’s governing body the FIA has enforced a very stringent set of technical regulations upon the teams so as to ensure that no-one team is capable of dominating an entire season as was possible in the past. This is good for the viewers because the racing becomes closer and much more competitive.

However, the only drawback of this is that participants are no longer able to experiment with new technologies which could ultimately aide the development of the green car market. This problem is only compounded by the FIA’s decision to place a cap on the number of testing deals available to teams to develop any new technologies (a rule that was introduced initially to reduce costs and ensure that richer teams didn’t gain an advantage over their less affluent competitors).

At the end of the day F1 is a form of entertainment, and ensuring the largest possible television audience is the key to its survival. However, this has come at the expense of car manufacturer participation; many of whom are now focusing on less watched motorsport categories such as Le Man. Whether or not you believe this to have been the right strategy will ultimately be a matter of opinion.
