Honda FCX Clarity becomes the first hydrogen fuel cell car production in the world. Recently the car made a debut on the UK roads for high profile test drive from the series of such cars. The basic technology of the cell car is to use hydrogen fuel and generate electricity out of it, which then powers the car, and of course with zero emission.
The first person to test drive the world’s first and only production hydrogen fuel cell car was Business Secretary Vince Cable. He drove the car to 10 Downing Street to a Cabinet meeting.

Cable said, “I was pleased to be one of the first in the U.K. to test drive the Honda FCX Clarity and find out more about the potential for hydrogen fuel cell technology.”

Honda FCX Clarity is the future

According to Honda, the Honda FCX Clarity is the future of motoring. The company also says that hydrogen is a better option than batteries in cars as it is less heavy and supplies enough electricity. Moreover, batteries have limitations and it cannot be relied in long journeys, but hydrogen is more efficient store of energy. Honda FCX Clarity gives the speed of 100mph (160km/h).

However, Honda adds that proper infrastructure is required to make these cars practically possible. The hydrogen fuel stations are to be set up across the country. At present, UK has only ten such fuelling stations.

Earlier, such cars were made by other carmakers, but those have never been into production. The cars are available on lease in Japan, Europe and also in United States. In US it is only leased out in Southern California, as the “fast-fill” hydrogen stations are only available here.

Honda FCX Clarity is a good example of seismic shift when we talk about technologies that power our cars. No more we have to depend on fossil fuels. We, now, can move on with electric power. An added advantage of Clarity is that its tanks can be filled much faster than the time taken to charge the batteries.

Professor David Bailey from Coventry University Business School said, “There’s a long way to go yet because it’s expensive, because consumers need to be educated, because the infrastructure needs to be put in place.”

Recently Honda FCX Clarity made its debut on the British roads as a promotional drive to high profiles. One among the high profiles to test drive the Clarity was Kit Malthouse, London’s deputy mayor. He drove the ‘benefits-of-clean-travel’ car at the City Hall in London. Honda FCX Clarity is a hydrogen fueled cell car that has zero emission. It only emits water vapour. The hydrogen is used to generate electricity, which then powers the car. The car is designed as five doors saloon.

This is a promotional drive by Honda to promote the clean travel car in UK, along with informing and educating the policy makers there to make visibility and potentiality of the car in the country.

After the drive, Mr. Malthouse said, “Our friends at Honda have produced a marvel of electrochemistry and advanced engineering in the FCX Clarity.” He also added further that Honda FCX Clarity will rank abreast of the Model T Ford in centuries and this car is a brilliant achievement.

In the promotional week, the car will be driven by few politicians, industry figures and also by some of the key members of the media. Apart from zero emission, the car also has excellent performance. It offers a range of 270 miles and the refuelling time of it is far shorter than what is required in charging batteries. Moreover, the batteries are much heavy.
