Volkswagen AG is spending billions of dollars in a comeback bid, with an aim to get a bigger share of the American market and leave Japan’s carmakers behind.  It is said to be investing $5 billion, $1 million of which goes towards building an assembly plant for mid-sized cars in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The company is also working on redesigning its midsize and compact cars to cater to the mainstream U.S. car buyers.  The idea is to produce more cars in North America just like the Japan carmakers do and price them as competitively, to attract mainstream buyers.
